Bike in public transport

Swiss trains (SBB/CFF/FFS)

  • With a valid bike ticket, you can load your bicycle or your bike trailers (unloaded) onto most SBB trains, postbuses and private railways yourself.

  • Important: In many trains, you need a reservation for the bike transport. For details, consult the SBB web site.
    The reservation costs 5 CHF and is sold over the counter and online (Ticket Shop and SBB app). There is no possibility to get it at the ticket machine!

  • If your bike can be folded up and stored in a suitable carry case, you can take it along free of charge as hand luggage.

French trains (SNCF)

As a general rule, in all French trains bikes can be carried as hand luggage and free of charge if they are folded or dismantled and placed in a cycle bag measuring no more than 120 x 90cm.    Depending ​on the type of the train, different rules apply for the transport of bicycles which are not dismantled:

    • TGV
      Transport of bikes is possible in most TGV trains, but require a reservation which costs 14 CHF (or 10 Euro). It is sold by telephone, over the SNCF counter or at CFF points of sale, only.
      There is no possibility to get it online or at the ticket machine!

    • TER
      Transpo​​rt of bikes is possible in almost all TER trains, but a few restrictions apply to some trains during peak times on weekdays. The transport of your bicycle is free of charge, reservations are not possible.
    • Transilien
      Transpo​​rt of bikes is possible in all Transilien trains, except during peak times on weekdays. The transport of your bicycle is free of charge, reservations are not possible.
    • InterCity
      Tra​​nsport of bikes is possible in Intercity trains, but some of them require a seat reservation, whereas others do not. Consequently, according to the type of train, it may or may not be necessary to book, or pay for, a place for your bike.
      For trains which require a reservation​​, price and booking procedure are identical with the TGV rules.
  • In Gen​e​va
    The TPG​​​ allow the transport of bicycles in their buses, trolleys and tram, sufficient space provided. The transport is charged at full fare.
  • In Lausanne
    The TL allow the tran​​sport of bicycles in their buses and in the metro, suff​icient​ space provided. The transport is charged at full fare.​
