Don’t forget the safety on your bike
Cycling is not without danger. But you can contribute yourself to make cycling safe by wearing adequate clothes, making sure that your bike is correctly equipped and by following the traffic rules.
In 2022 and 2023, 187 road safety incidents were reported on the CERN sites. Of these, 84 involved bicycles. These accidents are often not serious, but their consequences can be. We are all concerned!
Therefore we suggest to follow these recommendations:
- Wear a helmet – and wear it correctly by following these recommendations! – and bright and visible clothes.
In France, cyclists must wear a high-visibility waistcoat when cycling outside urban areas during the night or at bad visibility conditions.
At CERN, you can order a bike helmet, high-visibility waistcoat and a armband badge holder at the stores via the EDH Material request. - Make sure that your bike is safe.
The mandatory equipment of a bicycle in Switzerland is:- two sufficiently inflated tires
- two efficient breaks
- cat eyes: white for the front, red for the back, and orange on each pedal
- in the dark, during the night and in tunnels: a steady light, white for the front, red for the back. Additional blinking lights are allowed.
The rules in France a quite similar with the difference that your bike must be equipped permanently with front and back light.
- Road safety is important. Here is a list of recommendations for cyclists.
- In case you find dangerous places or situations for cyclists at CERN, you can declare them by completing the Internal Accident Report in EDH. Use this form also to declare any accidents and near-misses with or without your bike.
- Go through the online course for Road Traffic – Bike Riding!
- If you feel unsecure on a bike and/or you are afraid of the traffic, the association Pro-Vélo organises bike courses on Saturdays to improve your safety.
