The third year: 2014

The third year of the unofficial Bike2CERN challenge – from 06.01. to 19.12.2014 – broke the records of total km and km/biker.
73 actif cyclists cycled more than 125.000 km; this means each person has run ca. 1.715 km in average through the year.
And again, we have doubled the number of Sexy Bottoms! In 2014, we have got eight persons having cycled more than 4.200 km. Congratulations!
Have a glance here at the 2014’s ranking.

The second year: 2013

The second year of the unofficial Bike2CERN challenge started on the 7th January and run until the last day of work before the Christmas closure, the 20.12.2013.
During this year, roughly 100 cyclists did a least one commuting, cycled more than 111.000 km, managed to burn around 2 million calories through the year long Bike2CERN competition, spending about 8 months on the bike seat.
And at the end of the year, we have doubled the number of Sexy Bottoms! In 2013, we have got four persons having cycled more than 4.200 km. Congratulations!
The winners were – again – Tim Smith in first place and Martial Dujardin in second place, Gabriele Thiede came in as third. Have a glance here at the 2013’s ranking.

As last year, we will provide diplomas to all participants based on our karma levels. These diplomas will be made available shortly after the Christmas break. By the way, a new level has been introduced since last year: 3500 km now awards the title Tip Top Biker – which has been achieved by five persons.

And a part from the different Karma levels each of the participants achieved, there will be again some more tangible prizes:

  • This year we got hold of some very nice bike bags for the top three contestants, from an anonymous donation. We congratulate Tim Smith, Martial Dujardin, and Gabriele Thiede for an impressive effort throughout the entire year!
  • We are also preparing some gifts for the “one ticket per km” lottery, but this will take a bit more time. More news on that later.

The first year: 2012

The unofficial Bike2CERN challenge has been initiated by Yngve Levinsen and Jens Vigen in 2012.
It run from March to December, and was announced in the Weekly Bulletin. The results exceeded all expectations!
It turned out that 2012 was a great year for CERN! Not only was a new boson discovered, but we have now already found no less than two Sexy Bottoms as well.
The winners were unsurprisingly Tim Smith in first place and Martial Dujardin in second place. The competition for third spot got fierce, with Mika Huhtinen picking the longest straw in the end.

Have a glance here at the 2012’s ranking.

Well over 100 000 km in 10 months has been cycled by 140 registered participants, and over 100 people registering did at least one ride.

Finally, we have been together biking about the same amount EVERY month as one CERN car does in a year, which is great both for the environment and parking space problems at CERN!
And a part from the different Karma levels each of the participants achieved, there were also some more tangible prizes:

  • The CERN Velo Club has been kind enough to finance some very nice biking jerseys for the three winners.
The bike jerseys will be made after the competition has finished, in order to get the correct amount of km and the right size.
  • The library has also promised to provide some suitable books by the end of the year.
Those, and any other prizes we obtain will be given out “Endomondo style”. That means you get one lottery ticket per km you made this year, and the winners are drawn from that pool. Maximum one prize per person.
That means that no matter how few km you made you still got a chance, and you will always benefit from doing more km during these final cooler months.
